Conservative MP and former shadow Justice Minister Larry Brock has announced he will resign on Sept. 18. Brock, the MP for Brantford-Brant South-Six Nations, said in an Aug. 6 statement he will step down to return to the “front lines of justice” at the Crown attorney’s office in Brantford, Ont.

“My commitment to community safety hasn’t wavered one bit, and getting back into the courtroom means I can keep being tough on crime, making sure real justice happens right here at home,” Brock said. Brock noted that earlier in the summer, he stepped back from his position as shadow justice minister, with Tory MP Arpan Khanna taking over the role. Brock said he was “honoured” to have held the position, citing his commitment to “reforming the criminal justice system, holding criminals accountable, and restoring trust and confidence in our legal system.” Brock thanked his constituents for placing their trust in him, and said it was a “powerful reminder of just how much responsibility comes with this role,” particularly with Canadians facing economic uncertainty and what he described as “weak-on-crime policies” under the Liberal government. Brock served as a prosecutor for almost 19 years before becoming the MP for  the riding of Brantford-Brant South in 2021. He won 40.3 percent of the vote to the Liberal candidate’s 28.4 percent of the vote in 2021. In the 2025 election, he won 52.4 percent of the vote to the Liberal candidate’s 41 percent. During his time as an MP, Brock pushed for criminal justice and bail reform, and advocated changes to bail rules that would make it harder for people charged with violent offences, including those with recent violent-crime histories, to obtain release.

Conservative Leader Poilievre commented on the news of Brock’s resignation on social media, thanking him for “fighting to end Liberal bail, to lock up criminals, to restore safe streets and to support victims.”

Conservative MP Andrew Lawton, who served alongside Brock on the justice committee, said he was “sad to be losing” him as a colleague, but said that Canada needs “principled voices in our justice system.” Brock’s departure from politics will mark seven Conservative MPs who have left the party since the 2025 federal election. Four MPs crossed the floor to join the Liberal Party—Chris d’Entremont, Michael Ma, Matt Jeneroux, and Marilyn Gladu—helping the Liberals secure a majority government. Conservative MP Richard Martel was also appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Mark Carney in July, while Tory MP Cathay Wagantall will be resigning her seat on Aug. 31.

Brock’s riding has been represented by Conservatives MPs since 2008. With his departure, it is not yet known when the next byelection for the riding will take place.
