Toyota is recalling 508,354 vehicles with possible malfunctioning instrument cluster displays that could fail upon ignition startup, causing a blank display.
According to a report posted on Aug. 11 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the glitch could cause a deactivation of the critical safety information display that features hazard lights, turn signals, the seat belt warning system, and the smart key reminder, increasing the risk of an accident.
The recall affects certain 2025–2026 Camry hybrid vehicles. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Sept. 21. In the meantime, owners of affected cars may call Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 with the recall numbers 26TB16 and 26TA16. Dealers will update the display software free of charge.
Toyota discovered that the vehicles experiencing this issue are equipped with a 7-inch display combination meter that controls certain vehicle functions and displays information in the instrument panel. Following ignition, an error may occur in the startup sequence, causing the combination meter to become blank.
The automaker first became aware of the problem in July 2024 after receiving reports about blank displays upon startup. Parts were then recovered from the field and sent to the supplier for investigation. However, the issue could not be replicated.
In October 2025, both Toyota and the supplier continued investigations, suspecting a software glitch. The supplier was then about to perform bench testing that involved the software initialization. They were able to recreate a blank meter condition similar to the field complaints.
In April 2026, the supplier performed power-cycle bench testing on the meter but no issues occurred.
In June, Toyota and the supplier began testing on a complete vehicle, and in late July, they were able to reproduce the issue by inducing the software initialization concern and confirmed the blank meter condition. In addition, they discovered that the condition could cause inoperative turn signals and hazard lamps and affect the operation of certain warning buzzers.
Toyota has not received any reports of accidents related to the malfunction.
Just last month, Toyota Australia recalled nearly 70,000 vehicles because of a potential issue with the instrument panel display. This recall involved models with a 12.3-inch digital screen used for vital information such as warning lights, speed, and fuel levels.
In May, luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz USA recalled more than 144,000 vehicles due to a potentially defective instrument panel that failed to display critical safety information. In this case, NHTSA reported that the infotainment control unit could even reset while the vehicle is in motion, causing the display panel to go blank.
According to a June 2026 report from VehicleSafety.org, more than 1.5 million vehicles have been recalled over blank display screens in the past 18 months.
The independent motor vehicle safety website noted that the recalls, including by Toyota, Ford, Ram, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Kia, and Nissan, did not share any suppliers.
“When a digital cluster fails, it doesn’t degrade gracefully the way a dimming bulb behind an analog gauge might,” the report states. “It vanishes. Instantaneously, the driver loses visibility into speed, gear position, the brake warning light, the airbag status indicator, tire pressure, stability control state, and every turn signal and headlamp confirmation on the panel.”
It also noted that every one of the recalls required a software update, some of which are being delivered over the air, while others require a dealer visit that takes about 30 minutes.
