RCMP in Quebec have arrested and charged a 51-year-old Montreal man for allegedly making death threats against Prime Minister Mark Carney.

In a statement issued Aug. 10, the RCMP said Marc Porlier has been charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, contrary to Section 264.1 of the Criminal Code.

Police allege Porlier made the threats in an email sent to a senator and several other individuals.

An RCMP spokesperson said the email was sent to Senator Yuen Pau Woo. The spokesperson also said Porlier was previously convicted of arson and mischief over $5,000 in connection with a 2017 incident in Toronto and received a probation sentence.

The RCMP said its Integrated National Security Enforcement Team launched an investigation after becoming aware of the alleged threats. Officers arrested Porlier without incident on Aug. 5.

The spokesperson added that investigators did not locate any firearms during the course of the investigation.

Porlier appeared in Montreal court on Aug. 8.

“The RCMP takes seriously any threats that can affect one’s sense of security. Violent statements will not be tolerated,” the force said in its release. “Perpetrators may face criminal charges involving significant sentences. Such incidents must be reported if we are to combat this type of crime.”
