The Toronto Police Service is continuing its investigation after a security company that builds bulletproof vehicles for law enforcement was the target of an early morning shooting this week that left the firm’s headquarters damaged.
Shots were heard outside the global headquarters of INKAS Armoured Vehicle Manufacturing in the northwest part of the city just before 2 a.m. on July 28.
The police said via social media that responding officers discovered evidence of gunfire and found that the business had sustained damage. No injuries were reported, and the police said there was no information regarding suspects.
The Epoch Times contacted the Toronto police for an update on the investigation but spokesperson Cindy Chung said the force was not releasing any information beyond its brief social media post.
“The investigation is ongoing,” she said in an email. “There are no updates to provide.”
Police did not identify INKAS as the target of the shooting, but that was confirmed by the company later in the day.
“Earlier this morning, our Toronto headquarters was struck by gunfire in a serious incident that caused damage to the facility,” chief security officer Andy Ellis said in a July 28 media statement, noting that no employees or members of the public were injured during the incident. He said the building remains operational and employees were at work later that morning.
The Epoch Times also contacted INKAS to to comment on security measures in response to the incident but did not hear back by publication time.
INKAS manufactures a range of armoured transport vehicles, executive SUVs, luxury sedans, limousines and special purpose vehicles for banks, law enforcement agencies, corporate clients and private individuals, according to the company website.
The company recently announced its plan to invest tens of millions of dollars in three large production facilities—including one in Toronto—in response to demand from law enforcement agencies for its armoured vehicles. The other two facilities are planned for the United States.
The incident comes after shots were fired at the U.S. Consulate during the early morning hours of July 27, the second time the embassy has been targeted in the past four months. It was also hit by gunfire in March, an incident the RCMP characterized as a “national security incident.” Like the INKAS shooting, there were no injuries, but the building was damaged.
That shooting followed gunfire at two Jewish-owned bakeries in the city last weekend. The bakery was closed during the late night July 25 shooting and no injuries were reported.
There have also been several shootings targeting synagogues in the Toronto area since United States-Israeli strikes began on Iran at the end of February.
Authorities have not indicated whether they suspect a link between the INKAS shooting and any other recent gunfire incidents in the city.
