Toronto police are investigating after officers heard a gunshot before dawn on July 27 outside the U.S. Consulate, which had previously been targeted by gunfire in March.
The Toronto Police Service said officers heard a firearm discharged in the area outside the consulate in the downtown core at 4:46 a.m., and a white sedan was seen leaving the scene. No injuries were reported.
The area was cordoned off while investigators examined the scene. More than a dozen police vehicles were at the scene.
The consulate acknowledged the incident in a July 27 social media post, thanking police for their response.
The incident marks the second shooting outside the U.S. Consulate this year. The building was previously targeted on March 10 amid a series of attacks on synagogues and Jewish institutions that police later linked to an alleged gun-for-hire network.
The shooting also comes a day after two Jewish-owned bakeries in Toronto were vandalized on July 26, with one also struck by gunfire. No injuries have been reported and police are working to see if the two incidents are connected. The two businesses belong to the same Jewish-owned bakery chain.
Following the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, there have been several shootings targeting synagogues in the Toronto area, including one on March 2 and
on March 7.
Previous Consulate Shooting
The March 10 U.S. Consulate shooting, which the RCMP called a “national security incident,” inflicted no injuries but damaged the building.
The Toronto Police Service announced the arrest of 19-year-old Zara Jabbi on June 17, just days after saying he was the lone suspect still at large in connection with the March 10 consulate shooting.
Eighteen-year-old Sheldon Tracey-Stewart had been arrested earlier in June in connection with the March 10 consulate shooting and Jayon Burgher, 18, was taken into custody in April in connection with shootings in Oakville and Etobicoke. A third man, 19-year-old Nicholas Bennett, was arrested after an officer was shot and killed during one of several raids in June that were launched as part of an investigation into the shootings.
On June 16, Toronto
they had uncovered a pattern of young people being hired to commit gun crimes in the city, including firing at synagogues, Jewish schools, and the U.S. Consulate.
Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw said at the press conference that young people were being hired to carry out the attacks via encrypted messaging apps, and were being required to film the attacks in order to receive payment.
A U.S. criminal complaint filed in May had alleged that Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi, an Iraqi national charged with terrorism-related offences in the United States, and others were behind the March 10 attack on the consulate and a shooting at a Toronto synagogue.
