Shimen County, under Changde city in northwestern Hunan, has been hit by extreme rainfall since May 17. State-run news agency reported that the death toll had risen to six by 8 a.m. on May 21, with 10 others still missing, and more than 100,000 residents were affected.
Meanwhile, some residents said the losses appeared far greater and that some villages were left cut off without power, water, or communications.
