U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is criticizing Prime Minister Mark Carney for opening the door to cheap Chinese goods flooding the North American market, an occurrence that he said could impact trade talks between Canada and the United States this summer.

Bessent said Carney’s decision to drop industry-specific tariffs on EVs from China after meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping earlier this month did not bode well for renegotiation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), set to begin on July 1.
