BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Lawmakers still have several hundred bills and resolutions to deal with before crossover next week.
Wednesday’s afternoon session tackled a number of issues relating to technology, education and health.
Starting in the Senate, lawmakers unanimously passed a bill requiring age verification for adult entertainment sites. They say Senate Bill 2380 will provide more necessary enforcement of inappropriate content.
“Technology exists to enforce these safeguards and now the law must catch up,” said Sen. Boehm, R-Mandan.
Another bill passed unanimously, requiring school districts to develop a cell phone policy that limits or prohibits use during school hours. Senators say personal electronic devices must be regulated for the betterment of students.
“It minimizes distractions during school hours while maintaining the flexibility needed for educational purposes and student health needs,” said Sen. Michelle Axtman, R-Bismarck.
In the House, lawmakers passed a bill creating a public website that lists Legacy Fund investments. The legislators supporting it say it’s a way to provide more transparency.
“Although much of this information is available now, a new website that allows for a searchable interface would be more user-friendly and even potentially save taxpayer money by helping alleviate records requests due to easier-to-access data,” said Rep. Ty Dressler, R-Richardton.
Several bills were killed during the session, including efforts to ban fluoride usage in public water, allowing high school athletes to transfer and play varsity sports immediately without a year of ineligibility, and adding regulations for pregnancy resource centers.
