A Kurdish immigrant found guilty of smuggling more than $35 million in opium into Canada has been handed a 16-year prison sentence and may face deportation to Iran as a result of his criminal activities.
Fifty-three-year-old Sohrab Hanareh-Mafarani, a permanent resident of Canada since 2010, was convicted in Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice of importing opium, possession of opium for the purpose of trafficking, conspiracy to import opium, and conspiracy to possess opium for the purpose of trafficking.
