STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) – The City of Staunton’s website has new “Recite Me” technology to help people with disabilities or non-English speakers understand the resources on its website.
The “Recite Me” application allows users to modify the Staunton City website on their personal computer. The user can change the font size, use a magnifying glass and change the language of the site.
AnhThu Nguyen, Staunton’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission chair, said websites contain a lot of useful information. That information can be readily accessible for able-bodied people and/or English speakers, but those who struggle might feel intimidated to find those resources. She said equitable access to the website can help bridge some gaps in equity among people living in the Queen City.
”What we were finding is that the distribution and the dissemination of that information and the awareness was not inherently equitable,” Nguyen said. “That was something we really wanted to explore on the commission.”
The program can be accessed with the icon at the bottom left of the website. The icon looks like a person and it will open a new hotbar where users can find the exact accessibility option they need.
