Four people were killed after a vehicle crashed while driving in the wrong direction on the Stoney Trail highway in Calgary, according to police.

Calgary police said in an Aug. 3 statement that at 11 p.m. the previous night, they responded to reports of a collision in the northbound lane of the highway near the exit to Tsuut’ina Parkway.

They said a 2011 Mercedes Benz C350 operated by a 30-year-old man was believed to have been travelling in the wrong direction and struck an oncoming 2016 Subaru Impreza operated by a 43-year-old man.

Police say both vehicles caught fire following the impact, and a Chevrolet Equinox being operated by a 52-year-old woman then struck the Mercedes Benz. The driver of the Mercedes and the two passengers—a woman and child—were pronounced dead at the scene, as was the Subaru driver.

The driver of the Chevrolet and three youth passengers were transported to a hospital, with one suffering from life-altering but non-life-threatening injuries. The Calgary Fire Department also responded to the incident.

The Calgary police said its traffic unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances around the car crash, and that “impairment and excessive speed on behalf of the driver of the Mercedes Benz” are being investigated as factors contributing to the collision.
