A commercial truck driver has been charged after his tractor-trailer became stuck on a sharp curve on a southern Ontario roadway designated as a “no heavy truck” route.

The driver was trying to make a “tight hairpin turn” on the scenic Forks of the Credit Road in Caledon when his truck and trailer became “wedged into the guardrail,” the Caledon OPP said in a press release this week.

The Caledon road, in the northernmost part of Peel Region, was closed for more than two hours on July 24 so the truck and trailer could be extricated.

A heavy-duty tow truck was required because of the size of the vehicle, police said, but added the guardrail wasn’t damaged.

“Caledon OPP would like to remind commercial motor vehicle drivers that there are many route restrictions in Caledon that exist to keep them, their trucks and the roads safe,” the police said in the release. “If the GPS says yes, but the sign says no—trust the sign.”

A 65-year-old Mississauga man has been charged with disobeying a sign and interfering with traffic.

The fine for a standard “disobey sign” ticket under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act is $85, but that increases to $110 once the victim fine surcharge and court costs are added.

Parking or leaving a vehicle on a highway so that it interferes with traffic comes with a $25 fine under the act, although the total out-of-pocket cost is closer to $35 or $40, depending on the court jurisdiction, once the victim fine surcharge is included.

Individuals found guilty of driving-related violations will also have demerit points added to their records, the ministry said on its website. These demerit points remain on a person’s record for two years from the date of the violation.

Smaller driving infractions like disobeying a sign result in two demerit points while interfering with traffic comes with no points.
