A fiery multi-car crash in Mexico on Sunday has left at least nine people dead and about 10 others injured, including four U.S. citizens.
Among the dead are two children, while the injured include two members of the Mexican National Guard who are in serious condition and were transferred to the Magdalena Hospital in Guadalajara, Mexico’s Civil Protection authority said on July 12.
The incident happened on a highway in the state of Jalisco.
Videos on social media from local media showed several vehicles burned on a highway connecting the cities of Guadalajara and Tepic.
“Four patients in minor condition, all U.S. citizens, were transferred to the Arboledas Hospital in Guadalajara by a private ambulance from the highway,” Jalisco Civil Protection said on Sunday.
The multi-vehicle crash occurred at Kilometer 68 of the Guadalajara–Tepic highway, where a tractor-trailer struck vehicles involved in an earlier accident that was already being attended by emergency crews.
In a July 13 Facebook post, the Nayarit Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection said firefighters and state police officers were dispatched.
“Personnel from the Nayarit Fire Department and the State Police are traveling to the place to provide attention to the people involved, secure the area, and speed up the relief efforts,” the agency said.
The driver of the semi-truck involved was detained by National Guard officers with the assistance of civilian personnel stationed at the Plan de Barrancas toll plaza, El Financiero reported on July 12.
Last year, at least 21 people died in an auto accident on a highway connecting Mexico’s Oaxaca and Puebla States.
Puebla Interior Minister Samuel Aguilar said at the time that the accident involved three vehicles and that an unspecified number of other people were being treated for injuries.
Mexican newspaper La Jornada reported that a fatal head-on collision occurred when a cement truck attempted to overtake another vehicle before crossing into the opposite lane and hitting a bus, then crashing head-on into a transport van.
The deadly accident follows others on winding, steep roads in remote parts of Mexico. In March 2025, at least 11 people died when the bus transporting them flipped over in Oaxaca.
In 2023, at least 29 people died after a bus crashed into a ravine while traveling through the southern state.
