In an intelligence-gathering operation launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members violated protocols by using their own personal computers and social media accounts to gather information about Canadians, according to a new report.

An internal military report, first reported by CBC News, stated that three military units didn’t comply with their directives while gathering intelligence as part of Operation Laser, which lasted from March to July 2020. The operation, responding to the pandemic, also involved collecting information about public opinion to help with the military’s response to the pandemic.
